Dr. Rosenwald holds the record for the most capital ever paid for a medication that was not yet finalized in clinical development. In 2009 Cougar Biotechnology, company founded by Dr. Rosenwald, was sold to Johnson and Johnson for a unprecedented 1 billion dollars. The transaction hinged on a medication that had completed phase 2 in clinical trials for prostate cancer but had not yet completed phase 3 in clinical trials. A cancer drug to treat a rare form of deadly leukemia created by PolaRx BioPharmaceuticals received final marketing authorization only 30 months after the first patient was treated in a clinical trial, setting a record for the biotechnology industry.
